Toledo Public Schools president Sheena Barnes joins Gaywaves to discuss schools and her re-election bid

Toledo Public School Board president Sheena Barnes joins Gaywaves today to talk about why queer representation on school boards is positively consequential to LGBTQ identifying students and district employees as well as to the overall health of the community.

 

 

Barnes is the former director of Equality Toledo and has been a staunch fighter protecting the rights of transgender children in the Ohio State School Board and Ohio General Assembly.

 

Barnes faces a difficult re-election campaign, and of course, we talk about that, too.

Out gay U.S. presidential candidate Chase Oliver joins Gaywaves as he takes to the hustings

He describes himself as Armed and Gay. He has a rainbow 'Don't tread on me' flag. He shocked the political world by winning 81,000 (more than 2%) votes in the Georgia U.S. Senate race, having spent less than $8,000.

 

 

Now he's a candidate for President of the United States running as a Libertarian, and Chase Oliver's first media appearance as a presidential candidate is Gaywaves!!

Riley Habyl joins Gaywavws to talk about the LGBTQ+ Cleveland Oral History Project

This summer the Cleveland State University Center for Public History and Digital Humanities is compiling an oral history of LGBTQ+ Cleveland.  Riley Habyl is a graduate assistant who is heading the project.

 

Riley talks about the genesis of the project and where it will be permanently housed, and more importantly, who people can contact to get involved.

 

The project seeks stories from LGBTQ+ Clevelanders and those connected with the LGBTQ+ community of the Cleveland area to share.

The U.S. Supreme Court has created a religious exemption to non-discrimination laws in the recent 303 Creative decision which will have profound impact on the longstanding legal concept of public accommodations, no doubt affecting the LGBTQ+ community and other commonly discriminated against minorities doing business.

 

Shannon Minter, the legal director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, and Gaywaves' Supreme Court Whisperer has a lot to say about this case, including the outcome and the scandals that allowed it to get to the highest court in the land in the first place.
