Gaywaves interview with Akron mayoral candidate Shammas Malik

Our guest on Gaywaves this week is Akron Mayoral candidate Shammas Malik, an LGBTQ ally who is important for us to know. Malik helped to pass Akron's civil rights ordinance while a civil attorney in the law department. As a member of city council he led passage of a ban on conversion therapy and has been instrumental in making Akron one of the most LGBTQ affirming cities in Ohio.

 

Malik talks about those efforts and what he offers as the most progressive candidate for the office, police reform, equity and inclusion in city government, and his relationship to the LGBTQ community.

In the duopoly of U.S. national politics one party attacks us while the other does not defend us from the attacks.

 

As such we are seeing it become easier and more politically profitable for the Overton Window to move, especially as transgender rights are in the cross hairs.

 

This is not a good place for the LGBTQ Movement to be, and does not provide the politcal capital long term to hold on to gains made decades ago.

 

Co-hosts John Graves and Eric Resnick had this impromptu debate about what the movement response needs to be following two related reports.

Gaywaves co-hosts react to anti-transgender testimony

On March 8 the Ohio House Higher Education Commiittee heard sponsor testimony on H.B. 6, the proposed ban on transgender girls in scholastic sports, and most certainly the need to look between girls' legs to determine eligibility.

 

The sponsor, Rep. Jena Powell of Arcanum, is a graduate of Jerry Falwell's Liberty University and a Republican.   She calls the bill the "Save Women's Sports Act" and this is the second general assembly in which it has been introduced.

 

Gaywaves co-hosts John Graves and Eric Resnick respond to the testimony and critique its merit.

Gaywaves talks Rage Against the War Machine with organizers Angela McArdle and Nick Brana

 National Libertarian Party Chair Angela McArdle and People's Party National Chair Nick Brana (at the same time!) join Gaywaves to talk about the Rage Against the War Machine event February 19, 2023.

 

Though these national political parties do not agree on a number of issues of the day, they do agree that the U.S. and NATO proxy war with Russia in Ukraine needs to end, and the U.S. needs to stop sending huge amounts of national treasure to prolong it.

 

The two have organized the national Rage Against the War Machine event at the Lincoln Memorial February 19, and come on Gaywaves to talk about why LGBTQ Americans need to care about this issue, AND to talk about how their coming together represents the intersectionality minorities need to advance political goals. Intersectionality is an organizing principle being taught to younger LGBTQ activists. McArdle and Brana make it concrete.

Ohio Senate Minority Leader Nickie Antonio joins Gaywaves to talk about what to expect in the new session

Our guest on Gaywaves today is the newly elected Ohio Senate Minority Leader Nickie Antonio.

 

Antonio is the first out LGBTQ member of the Ohio general assembly, and now the top Democrat in Ohio.

 

Last general assembly was one of the most interesting on record for LGBTQ Ohioans, and Antonio looks into the future with some insight as to what to expect this session.

Kellye Pinkleton joins Gaywaves as an eyewitness to the disturbances in Clintonville

Kellye Pinkleton is well known to the LGBTQ community in Ohio having served in several professional capacities over the years.  She was the Interim Executive Director of Stonewall Columbus at one time, and worked at the Buckeye Region Anti-Violence Organization (BRAVO).

 

Kellye lives in Clintonville, on on the street where the UU church at the center of this weekend's cancelled Holi Drag family show and the Proud Boys, Patriot Front, and White Lives Matter who showed up to shut it down.

 

Kellye was there. She's an eyewitness.  She has a lot to say, and you will only hear her on Gaywaves.

Mpox/Monkeypox update and news with MetroHealth Pride Clinic medical director Mark McLoney

This segment is the latest installment in the Gaywaves commitment to covering the latest health concern to men who have sex with men.

 

Since his last appearance the World Health Organization has changed the name of Monkeypox to Mpox and a gay Cleveland man has died of the disease.

 

There is also good news on this front.  Mpox is no longer an emergency status disease, mostly due to aggressive vaccinations and behavior changes.

Post election post-mortem with out gay Ohio Auditor candidate Taylor Sappington

Nelsonville Auditor Taylor Sappington proved he has the chops to run for a state office as an out gay man in Ohio.

 

As the very successful Auditor of the Appalachian city of Nelsonville -- a city which Sappington is credited with saving -- he has been a transformative figure.

 

As the Democratic nominee for State Auditor against a popular opponent in a "red wave" year, Sappington was the only Democrat on the state executive office ticket who over-performed, and in some counties, led the ticket in total votes.

 

Sappington first came on Gaywaves when he launched his historic campaign.

 

In this segment he shares his experiences and learned lessons.

Out gay YouTube and Means TV commentator Mike Figueredo joins Gaywaves to discuss the result of the midterm election and the terror at Club Q

The Humanist Report's Mike Figueredo makes his second Gaywaves appearance to discuss the result of the midterm election and the act of terror at Club Q.

 

Figueredo is a successful YouTube and Means TV progressive commentator, and one of only a few who is an out gay man, and who comments often on LGBTQ issues on his show.

 

Mike's thoughts and insights in this segment will be useful to the LGBTQ community for the remainder of the Biden Administration, and into the next administration.
