Hon. Dennis Kucinich talks about his run for congress as an Independent, and about his long relationship with the LGBTQ community

Our guest is Hon. Dennis Kucinich, making his first Gaywaves appearance. Kucinich has been an ally of LGBTQ people long before it was cool, even for Democrats. He is the first candidate who made marriage equality a platform plank in a national election, even while others ran from it (2004 presidential campaign when he was the last challenger standing to the eventual nominee).

 

 

Kucinich, an 8-term congressman, is coming out of what could be a comfortable retirement to run for congress in Ohio's newly drawn 7th District as an Independent. He covers a lot of ground in this interview, and it is insightful.

Transgender Ohio House aspirant Vanessa Joy joins Gaywaves

 Vanessa Joy, wanted to be a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, but was disqualified from the ballot because of an arcane Ohio law about name changes that can be used to keep transgender people off ballots, and in her case, indeed was.

 

Hear her story and thoughts about next steps.

 

Note:  Stark County Board of Elections chair and former Stark County Democratic Party chair Sam Ferruccio and current Stark County Democratic Party chair and Board of Elections member Dimitrios Pousoulides were contacted for comment on this segment.  Ferruccio's office acknowledged the contact but did not provide comment.  Pousoulides did not respond.

Our guest on Gaywaves today is Green Party presidential candidate Dr. Jill Stein. This is her first LGBTQ interview during this campaign, and we took that seriously, discussing the role of the federal government in protecting transgender people from attacks in the states. Stein talks about what she believes LGBTQ people need from their federal government and how to get it.

 

The interview also explores opportunities for candidates who are not Democrats or Republicans that are unique to this election, and what that means generally and to LGBTQ people specifically.

She and her family moved to Ohio because they believed it would be a good place for their son, and soon found themselves facing the onslaught of anti-transgender legislation and toxic political climate.

Gaywaves talks Ohio legislation with Honesty for Ohio Education founding director Cynthia Peeples

On December 13 the Ohio Senate passed H.B.68, the combined anti-transgender bills banning gender-affirming care for minors and prohibiting transgender girls from participating in scholastic athletics.

 

 

As we await the governor's likely signature, Gaywaves today explores the Senate vote, some history, and more importantly, the possible future.

 

 

Founding director of Honesty for Ohio Education Cynthia Peeples is our guest. Honesty for Ohio Education is an advocate for LGBTQ rights that is a supporting partner of the effort defeat the above legislation as well as three other dangerous bills.

Queer Palestinian Empowerment Network co-founder Eyad Alkurabi joins Gaywaves

Our guest on Gaywaves is Eyad Alkurabi, co-founder of the Queer Palestinian Empowerment Network (QPEN) to react to the current genocide in Gaza from a queer perspective and to speak candidly about queer life in Occupied Palestine.  

 

The interview includes discussion as to how Israel, a country without a constitution, uses queer affirmation in cities like TelAviv as a public relations operation to western liberals to gain sympathy for tis military occupation, Aparthed and settler-colonialism, as well as the genocide we see now.  This phenomenon is known as pinkwashing.

Stonewall Democrats of Central Ohio president Marc Gofstein joins Gaywaves to explain why LGBTQ Ohioans are invested in passage of Issue 1, the state constitutional amendment for reproductive rights

 

Stonewall Democrats of Central Ohio president Marc Gofstein is a leader in the statewide campaign to pass Issue 1.

 

Issue 1 is the propsed Ohio constitutional amendment designed to protect the right to abortion and other reproductive medical treatment.

 

 

Passage of the amendment will provide safeguards for LGBTQ Ohioans as well, which is why it is important that we are involved in the effort to pass it.

Annise Parker, former Houston mayor and current director of the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund joins Gaywaves

In this segment the guest is Mayor Annise Parker.

 

Parker, an out lesbian, served three terms as the mayor of Houston, Texas before being term limited. During her tenure Houston was the most populous U.S. city with an out mayor until the election of Lori Lightfoot in Chicago.

 

Currently Parker directs the LGBT+ Victory Fund and Victory Fund Institute. When we caught up with her she was in Columbus for a Victory Fund event. This interview was conducted face-to-face, and the subjects covered include Texas politics, LGBTQ politics in Washington, and the overview of the Victory Fund and what it's doing.
