Gaywaves interview with Ohio Rep. Thomas West

As Ohio is in the process of re-districting state and federal legislative districts, Rep. Thomas West joins Gaywaves today to talk about why LGBTQ Ohioans would benefit from fairer, more equitable districts.

 

Rep. West is a Democrat and is president of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus. He represents Ohio's 49th House District, which is in Stark County. He is central to the efforts led by House Democrats which is conducting hearings throughout the state, and organizing for more fair legisltive maps.

Johnny K. Wu is an openly gay Asian film maker in Cleveland. His most recent film 'Wu Lin The Society,' which was filmed in Clevleand and the surrounding area, is recieving lots of critical acclaim on the independent film circuit.

Gaywaves coverage and extended commentary on the scandal at HRC involving Alphonso David's involvement with Andrew Cuomo

The $50 million per year LGBTQ juggernaut Human Rights Campaign is plagued by scandal as its president Alphonso David is implicated in the sexual harrassment allegations against Andrew Cuomo that led to his resignation.

David was Cuomo's lead counsel and appears in the New York Attorney General investigation report as a central figure.

The HRC Board of Directors responded by expressing confidence in David, and giving him a 5 year contract on the very day the report was released.

HRS staffers, however, are having none of it, and are calling for David's resignation.

Kent State University now has a scholarship in memory of MJ Eckhouse, LGBTQ and Progressive activist and organizer who died suddenly in October.

 

Eckhouse was well known as a force for good trouble among Ohio's LGBTQ community, and communities of recovery, and a Kent State Alumni.

 

MJ's husband and widow Lis Regula is our guest on Gaywaves this week to talk about how the KSU scholarship and MJ Eckhouse memorial fund at the Portage County Foundation came about, and can continue MJ's legacy for generations to come.

Marc Gofstein has a good chance of becoming the next member of the Ohio House of Representatives, and is an openly gay man and long time LGBTQ rights activist. Marc talks about himself and his journey as well as the politics of Ohio's 26th House District and the state of LGBTQ activism in Ohio.

Gaywaveslook back on Pride 2008, the 30th anniversary of the Rainbow flag

2008 was the 30th anniversary of the Rainbow Flag as a Pride symbol.

In 2008, Eric Resnick interviewed Gilbert Baker, who created the Rainbow Flag, for the Pride Guide of the now defunct Gay People's Chronicle.

Baker died in 2017.

This segment is Resnick reading some excerpts from that interview to close out Gaywaves' commemoration of Pride 2021.

Shannon Minter is the legal director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, and in this Gaywaves appearance, offers sharp analysis of the U.S. Supreme Court decision Fulton v. City of Philadelphia -- what it means, and what it doesn't, and most importantly, how it effects the future of the LGBTQ rights movement.

Shannon also offers smart commentary on the Equality Act, which is now stalled in the U.S. Senate.  This is a point of view not being expressed on corporate media nor said out loud by LGBTQ advocacy organization leaders.

Gaywaves interview on the 40th Anniversary of AIDS in the USA with Gil Kudrin

June 5, 1981, forty years ago this week, reports appeared of a strange new illness that seemed to only affect gay men. That illness turned out to be AIDS.

 

Our guest on Gaywaves this week is Gil Kudrin, who is one of the longest survivors of AIDS on the planet, and a leader of ACT UP Cleveland at the time when LGBT men and women, through efforts like ACT UP and other activist efforts, taught the National Institutes of Health how to deal with the problem, and how to serve the gay population at a time when our government did not even utter the words.

Gaywaves interview with Dominic Deweiler regarding anti-LGBTQ measures inserted into Ohio's budget

The Ohio Senate has included in its version of the state budget, SC 3909, known as the "Medical Practitioner Conscience" language that would allow any medical professional to refuse treatment to anyone, including LGBTQ patients if the provider has a religious objection of any kind. This measure was inserted into the budget at the last minute, and anonymously late Tuesday, in time for the Senate to vote on Wednesday afternoon.

 

Equality Ohio has mobilized resistance to the best of their ability, but this came on fast and the resistance nneds to grow quickly.

Our guest on Gaywaves today is Dominic Detweiler, Equality Ohio's public policy strategist. The conversation is focused on where this needs to go.
