March 31 is Transgender Day of Visibility and our guest on Gaywaves this week is TransOhio board member Ginger Williams.

 

Ginger talks about the importance of visibility as an empowering tool in the struggle for transgender equality, and also a new amendment to H.B. 327 in the Ohio House that could lead to it becoming a "Don't Say Trans" bill, as well as attempts to stop transgender young women from participating in scholastic athletics.

The 2022 Cleveland International Film Festival opens March 30 at its new home in Cleveland's storied Playhouse Square.  This year there are 17 titles in the Queer Cinema category.

 

The festival remains one of the major cultural touchstones for LGBTQ community in NE Ohio and around the globe, and has, throughout all its 46 years, delivered world class LGBTQ documentaries, shorts, and quality entertainment.

Gaywaves with LGBTQ movement hero Evan Wolfson

Evan Wolfson is an LGBTQ movement hero, whose strategy and legal brilliance ensured victory in the fight for marriage equlity in the U.S.

Wolfson also served as an intern for then senator Joe Biden in 1976, so the segment also goes into Wolfson's assessment of his former boss' performance for the LGBTQ community.

 

The subjects covered include the Equality Act, winning the attacks on transgender youth, and building a movement that can withstand political attacks.  At the end Wolfson delivers an important message to LGBTQ youth.

Equality Ohio's director of strategic partnerships Gwen Stembridge joins Gaywaves today to discuss Equality Ohio initiatives and programs preparing activists to resist the iminent anti-transgender bills in the Ohio legislature.

 

The bills have had sponsor testimony, meaning they are moving, as Republicans use the attacks on transgender youth to inspire their base to vote.

 

Equality Ohio has a response and is fighting back.

Meet Taylor Sappington, the openly gay man running for Ohio Auditor. Sappington is currently the auditor of the city of Nelsonville, Ohio, and despite his youth, his professional accomplishments are many.

 

Sappington does not have the typical biography of candidates for statewide office, and that uniqueness of experience and raw leadership talent make him a worthy opponent in this race.

Gaywaves interview with Ohio House candidate Jim Obergefell

The man who litigated his marriage at the U.S. Supreme Court and won marriage equality for all Americans is now running for a seat in the Ohio House of Representatives, and today he is our guest on Gaywaves.

 

Jim Obergefell is the named litigant in Obergefell v. Hodges, the 2015 U.S. Supreme Court case winning same sex couples in the United States the right to marry. A Sandusky native, Obergefell wants to represent a NW Ohio district in the Ohio House, and if successful, he will be only the third openly LGBT person to do that.

 

His race is already garnering notariety around the country and the English-speaking world.

 

Jim talks about his vision to represent the LGBTQ community of Ohio, and all Ohioans and what his candidacy is all about.

Gaywaves interview with Jillian Marcellus

The most comprehensive set of focus groups and polling data ever on transgender rights was commissioned by the Transgender Law Center and released in December in the form of a communications guide titled Transgender Youth and the Freedom to be Ourselves.

 

Today on Gaywaves our guest is Jillian Marcellus, director of narrative at ASO Communications and former communication director at the Transgender Law Center. ASO and Lake Research Partners are the other principle partners on the work.

 

This work introduces our community to the Race Class Gender narrative, which data shows to be the mose effective way to combat those seeking to attack transgender youth, especially, and transgender rights more generally.

 

The report is not a good news story. Rather it is a guide to the work that needs to be done and to the long journey on which LGBTQ activists and organizations need to focus.

 

Gaywaves is among the first LGBTQ news outlets to feature this work, and because of the gravity of it, we spend nearly an hour on it.

Named one of Cleveland Magazine's Most Interesting People of 2020, B. Riley House founder and CEO Rafael “Tony” Correa joins Gaywaves today.

 

Cleveland's B. Riley House, founded in 2016, is one of only two sober homes and addiction treatment facilities for LGBTQ+ people in the nation.

 

As its founder, Correa links his story of recovery and self-actualization to that of the agency, and he explains why hetero-normative recovery agencies may not be what LGBTQ+ people need in their recovery journey. This is a Gaywaves segment you don't want to miss.

Shannon Minter on Gaywaves talking about the consequences of Roe v. Wade before the Supreme Court

This segment of Gaywaves addresses the consequences of the U.S. Supreme Court's likely action with Roe v. Wade with our Supreme Court Whisperer Shannon Minter.

 

Minter is the Legal Director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, which has a long history of involvement with LGBTQ cases before the high court.
