Named one of Cleveland Magazine's Most Interesting People of 2020, B. Riley House founder and CEO Rafael “Tony” Correa joins Gaywaves today.

 

Cleveland's B. Riley House, founded in 2016, is one of only two sober homes and addiction treatment facilities for LGBTQ+ people in the nation.

 

As its founder, Correa links his story of recovery and self-actualization to that of the agency, and he explains why hetero-normative recovery agencies may not be what LGBTQ+ people need in their recovery journey. This is a Gaywaves segment you don't want to miss.

Shannon Minter on Gaywaves talking about the consequences of Roe v. Wade before the Supreme Court

Having been elected handily, Dion Manley became Ohio's first and only openly transgender elected official during an election cycle where the latest culture war is anti-transgender legislation and public sentiment.

 

Manley is a long time political activist from San Francisco and most importantly to him, a parent.

Bill Hedrick, an openly gay man from Columbus, and long time assistant law director for the city, was elected Municipal Court Judge in Tuesday's election.

 

Hedrick talks abut his race and his journey, which includes an unsuccessful run for Franklin County Common Pleas Court in 2004.

Equality Ohio Director of Public Policy talks about Ohio‘s H.B. 454

The Ohio legislature is at it again.

 

 H.B. 454 is now in the Ohio House. It is another attack on transgender children -- this time, an attempt to deny them medical care through the application of civil penalties to medical professionals, school professionals and mental heath professionals who provide care to transgender youth.

 

Fortunately, Gaywaves is on it, and Maria Bruno, the Public Policy Director at Equality Ohio is our guest to break it down and talk about what needs to be done.

Convergence is a celebration of LGBTQ artists of the Western Reserve and is exhibited in multiple venues around Greater Cleveland.  It is the largest LGBTQ art exhibition ever in this area.

Equality Ohio‘s director Alana Jochum and public policy director Maria Bruno join Gaywaves to talk about the federal lawsuit against LGBTQ rights filed by 20 attorneys general, and Ohioans

Two days ago 20 Republican state attorneys general, including Ohio's Dave Yost, filed a federal suit in Knoxville, Tennesee, that threatens the gains the LGBTQ community made last year when the U.S. Supreme Court decided the Bostock v. Clayton County case, which changed the meaning of "sex" for the purpose of including protection on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity under Title VII and by extension Title IX.

The reactionary lawsuit, which appears to be motivated by cynicism and culture war partisan politics, seeks to upend Bostock, and give the states the legal right to harm LGBTQ people, especially transgender people, and more especially transgender girls.

This action is an existential threat to LGBTQ rights, and because of ideological shifts on the courts, it has a good chance to succeed.

 

Gaywaves this week addresses this lawsuit head on. Two thirds of the show is devoted to guests talking about it.
