GLAAD’s senior director of news and campaigns Barbara Simon joins Gaywaves to talk about corporate accountability around Pride

America's corporations have found ways to cash in on LGBTQ Pride, so much so that during the month of June it is hard to miss the ubiquitous rainbow colors and special messages.

 

But do these corporations really care about LGBTQ lives, other than as a business opportunity?

 

GLAAD has been watching, and following trends, and has some concerns, as some of the most Pride signaling companies are also supporting politicians that do the LGBTQ community the most harm.

National Center for Lesbian Rights legal director Shannon Minter joins Gaywaves to talk about the future of LGBTQ rights in this new post-Roe v. Wade era

The U.S. Supreme Court has made it perfectly clear that substantive due process rights, which include the right to sex with someone of the same sex and marriage equality, are now under threat.

 

In this segment Gaywaves' own 'Supreme Court Whisperer' Shannon Minter discusses the reality of the threats, the state of the Court and the entire federal judiciary.

 

For nearly 30 years LGBTQ rights have expanded under a Court willing to recognize Substantive Due Process as a framework to guarantee reproductive rights, guarantee sexual privacy and advance equality.  That era just ended, and the new era will likely lead to going backwards.

 

Minter is candid that the LGBTQ rights movement is not up for this yet, and offers some thoughts as to what needs to happen to address the new reality.

Anytime we have to issue an adult content warning before bringing on a guest, Gaywaves is a good time. Such is the case in this segment as our guest is Carlton Nash Leatherman, Mr. Ohio Leather 2020-21.

 

As we kick off Pride Month 2022 the conversation highlights the history and future of the leather sub-culture of the LGBTQ+ rainbow as well as Nash's personal experinces and accomplishments in the community. Gaywaves interview with Out Support co-founder Sandy Varndell

 

 

 

Sandy Varndell is our guest on Gaywaves today in a segment that is both heart-breaking and empowering as the Ohio House Families, Aging and Human Services Committee hears H.B. 454 -- the banning of medical care for transgender minors.

Varndell is mother to a transgender son and bisexual daughter, and a community activist and organizer doing some fantastic work in right-wing hot bed Medina County, and she's winning. She is also the co-founder of Out Support, a leading transgender support organization in Ohio.

Gaywaves interview with North Canton Hoover High senior Ash Barros

Our guest on Gaywaves is North Canton Hoover High School senior Ash Barros.

 

Barros is transgender and has been a leader among fellow LGBTQ+ Hoover students protesting the school district allowing U.S. Senate candidate Jane Timken to film and anti-transgender political ad at the school.

 

Barros also offers takes on what it is like to be a transgender high school student in a political claimate where state legislators are attacking transgender youth.

Gaywaves interview with Democraticcandidate for Ohio governor John Cranley

As a member of Cincinnati's city council Cranley was a force to move the city from one of the most LGBTQ-hostile in the nation (and the only one with a charter amendment that prohibited any effort to treat LGBTQ people equally under the law) to one of the most affirming, and one of only two in Ohio to earn HRC's top rating of cities.

 

Cranley's gubernatorial campaign highlights Cincinnati's transformation, and he speaks often about how the culture change sparked population growth and economic benefit.

 

During this interview Cranley talks about his plans to lead Ohio similarly and the tools he will deploy to improve LGBTQ equality and racial justice as governor.
